The five castles of Santorini were created to protect the inhabitants of the island mainly by pirates during the Venetian period in the Aegean. Santorini was given away to Sanudo and Varotsi who built the five castles for the Venetian settlers. In the Byzantine era Vigles (watchtowers) were built in order to inform the inhabitants of impending attacks. The five castles of Santorini are the ones of Skaros, of Agios Nikolaos, of Pyrgos, of Emporio and of Akrotiri.
