Panagia Episkopi

The Byzantine church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary is located in the village of Mesa Gonia and allegedly was built by Alexios Komnenos in the 11th century.
Nowadays it is considered a very important Byzantine monument.

The magnificent carved marble with blue waters and its temple with design elements of wax is a rare example of art, worthy of any visitor to admire. The faithful may venerate the image of the Virgin Mary who luckily escaped theft during the restoration works of 1982.
Another typical example of Byzantine art is the paintings that decorate the church and are in a very good condition.
